Roxie: A Story of a Pet Rock

Recently a lot of friends have been going through miles stones in their life. Friends have been starting relationships, getting engaged, getting married, moving into their first place, getting their first pet, finding their first full time job, having babies, watching their child walk into their first day of kindergarten, and many other so called milestones that supposedly make one’s life a little closer to complete. All this made me wonder “what I was doing with my life?” I decided to go on a walk, and ponder this.
I was walking down a country road early in the morning, the fall leaves at my feet, just enjoying the sun and the cool breeze.

As I continued walking I saw something in the distance…

As I got nearer I slowly made out what it was...

I saw two sad eyes looking up at me, from a little pet rock.

It looked lost and frightened, as if someone had just left it there, and went away.

I decided to continue walking, I had no business taking in a lost pet rock. I told myself I would not look back.

After taking a few steps I felt a little guilty just walking away, and I looked back to see those sad little eyes were still there.

So I walked back, picked it up and brought it home.

At home I gave the rock a bath, which rocks apparently do not enjoy.

And dried it off.

I also gave it food and water, which I found that rocks don’t eat very much.

The rock was quite friendly, so I figured the poor little thing might be lost. I put up some posters to see if I could find out if it belonged to anyone.

After a few days I realized that the rock might be staying, so I made it a bed.

Over the next few days I got sick of calling the rock “rock”, so I decided to give it a name. The names that I first came up with were “Rocco” which was too cliché, and Rocky like the name of the Squirrel from an old cartoon, but that was too similar to just plain “rock”. I then thought of my background in theatre and decided to name the rock “Roxie” after a character from a musical.

After a few more days Roxie began to grow on me and since no one had called about a lost pet rock, I decided to adopt Roxie as my own. That is how I became the owner of a pet rock.
